Warning: Fraudulent Online Shopping Sites for Rice and Other Products
Checkpoints to avoid fraudulent websites:
- Prices are suspiciously low compared to the market rate.
- The seller’s contact information is unclear or incomplete.
- Online searches show unrelated business information or fake company details.
- The listed phone number does not connect when called.
Case Example: Phone Scam Posing as Police Officers
A resident received a call from someone claiming to be a police officer, saying:
“Your bank account has been used for money laundering. A suspect we arrested claims you were an accomplice. You can avoid appearing in person if we speak via LINE video call.”
The victim was guided into a video call, shown what appeared to be a police ID, and was instructed to provide personal details such as their address, bank account number, and driver’s license. The call continued for a long time, and eventually, they were told to transfer money. Suspecting something was wrong, the victim hung up. They are now worried about misuse of their personal information.
Advice from Consumer Affairs and Police Authorities
This scam involves callers pretending to be police officers, often displaying phone numbers ending in 0110 (commonly used by police stations in Japan) to gain trust. They may invite you to a LINE video call to show a fake police ID, ask for personal information, and demand money under the pretext of an investigation.
Key Points to Remember:
- Police will never contact you via LINE messages or video calls.
- Even if the call appears to be from a legitimate police number, hang up, look up the police station’s official contact number yourself, and confirm before responding.
- Never give personal information to unknown callers.
- If you are unsure, consult your local consumer affairs center or the police immediately.
