Common Telephone-based Fraud Methods

[Posing as a City Hall Employee]

  • “You are entitled to a medical expense refund.”
  • “We sent you the necessary documents, but since you haven’t responded, we are calling.”
  • “The deadline is approaching, so please complete the process at an ATM.”

[Posing as a Police Officer]

  • “A mobile phone in your name has been used for fraud.”
  • “In order to investigate, we must arrest you.”
  • “To confirm whether the money in your account came from victims, we need to check the banknote serial numbers. If the serial numbers are valid, you will not be arrested.”
  • “Please transfer all the money in your account to the designated account.”

[Posing as a Bank or Financial Institution Employee]

  • “There is dormant money in your family’s account, and if left unattended, it will be transferred to the national treasury.”

[Posing as a Store or Commercial Facility Employee]

  • “Your credit card has been fraudulently used.”
  • “You need to exchange it for a new card.”

[Relative-in-distress scam (“It’s me” scam)]
(A type of impersonation scam where the caller pretends to be a family member, often claiming to be in urgent trouble)

  • “It’s me, it’s me.”
  • “My voice has changed because I have a throat tumor.”
  • “I need to have surgery and urgently need a large sum of money.”

There are many fraud methods, but one simple step can protect your money

Some people think, “I know these tricks. I wouldn’t fall for such scams.”
However, fraudsters are extremely skilled conversationalists, and many people lose their composure and judgment while listening. Always take preventive measures to protect yourself and your family’s assets.

Set Your Phone to Answering Machine Mode

  • Even when you are at home, set your phone to answering machine mode and avoid answering unknown calls.
  • A recommended message:
    “To prevent fraud, this phone is set to answering machine mode even when we are home, and all calls are recorded for security purposes.”

Check the Caller’s Number Before Answering

  • Use a caller ID service to confirm the caller before picking up the phone.
